It was the very early 90’s and Nintendo was tearing it up with the NES, SNES, and Gameboy. Why not on TV? In stepped “Kevin” who was pulled into his TV to rescue/lead some of the greatest heroes of that time. Mega Man, Simon B, and Kid Icarus joined Kevin, Duke (his dog), and the Princess in battling the likes of Mother Brain (what no Samus?) and her stooges. No matter when you jumped into the world of video games, Captain N is still a must watch for fans of gaming of all ages. Heck, even Gameboy jumped on the Captain N bandwagon soon after Kevin got things rolling. So if you haven’t seen Captain N, do yourself a favor and pick up a copy before its out of print and you miss out on some of the best video game based TV ever. If you’re lucky, you may even find some old copies of Nintendo Power/Captain N comics that had Samus Aran on the team…

Sure we have No More Heroes for the sword play and the upcoming Gladiator AD game for a sword & shield fighting game but we still want our Highlander fix! Well until the higher ups get a clue (and are willing to take a large risk that others agree with us)… we have other Highlander items to keep us happy. The good thing is… a few of them are on sale right now!

Prototype Alex Mercer NECA

The game is out, the comic is going strong, and now we are greeted by the action figure from NECA! Alex Mercer is part of the Player Select action figure line that NECA has been doing for a few years now. We have seen some great Lara Craft, Ryu (from both Street Fighter and Ninja Gaiden), and Gears of War figures but it seems with the recent Bionic Commando and now the Alex Mercer figure that NECA is starting to shift away from the action figure and more to the staction figure (of He-Man Statue fame).

I won’t lie… the figure looks badass and just like he does in the game. In package, he fits in well with previous figures in the Player Select line but it is when you take him out of package when you start to notice the differences. In the game, Alex is very agile and able to shift into whatever he would like. As far as the figure goes… Alex will be striking a pose and sticking with it. Sure he has the ability to move his arm, blade, and head… but outside of that… don’t expect much. Which is too bad as if this was a McFarlane figure… we wouldn’t complain but this is a NECA Player Select and some decent amount of articulation is expected. 

So here is to a new version of Alex… ok maybe 2 new versions as we would love to get our hands on the Dark Sector inspired armor form and an articulated human form (with interchangeable arms/hands/etc.). Why stop there… make a series (like they do with GOW) and do the 2 Mercers, the various infected, and the Specialist. Now that would be a cool idea for a line-up that would look good along NECA’s Resident Evil and Gears of War figures.

If you are looking for a great statue for Alex Mercer, then this is an excellent buy. If you want some action with your action figure, then you will be unsatisfied with this recent edition to the Player Select line (plus if you had pre-ordered the Prototype game through Gamestop… you basically have the figure but in a much smaller form)
