Shadowy Clip Of An Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet [Clips]
On July - 17 - 2009
This trailer for Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet is the best thing you'll see all day, a gorgeous introduction to what may become one of your most anticipated releases, whenever and on whatever platform to this game is coming.
If you're unfamiliar with the game, currently listed only for a PC release at this point, this post at the official Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet blog will get you up to speed quickly. Creators Michel Gagne and Joe Olson envision the game as "a side-scroller that would combine old school arcade style game play with feature film quality design and animation," seemingly with a little black metal influence.
Gagne writes that the clip is comprised of nothing but in-game footage. The team is also apparently on the hunt for "potential financial partners," meaning some brilliant publisher or benevolent soul should make with the checkbook, posthaste!

Is This MechWarrior 5? [Rumor]
On July - 9 - 2009
a teaser trailer appeared for a mysterious new title. One featuring a giant robot's...foot. It was heavy, it was clunky, and got many people excited it was for Mechwarrior 5. And hey, it just might be!
IGN say that tomorrow morning they'll be running an interview with a Mr. Jordan Weisman, who will explain what the trailer is all about. Jordan Weisman runs the company that now owns the rights to Mechwarrior. Jordan Weisman formed FASA, who used to own the rights to Mechwarrior.
So, yeah, it's probably a new Mechwarrior game.

Redrawn PC Erotic Game Looks Like This [Maximum Risky]
On July - 7 - 2009
Remember this? Sure, you do! This image must have been burned into your brain. Erotic game Sengoku Hime is infamous for its crummy game art.
That art has been re-drawn for the PS2/PSP ports. Compare the new art (below) with the original PC art (above). Have a preference?
Sengoku Hime is out this September on the PSP and the PS2 in Japan. The world will never be the same.

Don’t Rule Out Microtransactions For World Of Warcraft [WoW]
On July - 7 - 2009
While "free to play, pay to upgrade" is a payment structure more and more online games are adopting, the continued success of Blizzard's World of Warcraft shows there's still life in the old-fashioned model of paying a flat monthly subscription fee.
That's not to say, however, that Blizzard haven't noticed the commercial appeal of microtransactions.
In an interview with Videogamer, Blizzard's Tom Chilton has said:
I certainly think it's possible that we could do some kind of micro-transaction stuff. Whether or not World of Warcraft ever goes the direction of, I guess like Anarchy Online has gone the direction of going free-to-play with micro-transactions. Whether we ever shift to a free-to-play model is really too hard to say at this point. Anything I say now could easily five years from now end up seeming like, oh my gosh, that was an incredibly dumb thing to say, how naive!Hardly a firm statement of intent, but then, you don't stay top dog without keeping an eye on the competition. Bank Heist Causes Bank Run in EVE Online [Eve Online]
On July - 4 - 2009
Last month, the swindling of more than 200 billion ISK resulted in an actual run on a virtual bank in EVE Online. The best part? The loot was sold IRL - just $5,000.
No, griefers from Something Awful are not claiming responsibility. Not that any of them would have the patience to play nice long enough to become a controller for EBank. User Ricdic was, and then he took the dough and sold it off, he says in order to place a down payment on a house and pay medical bills.
The heist dwarfs the earlier 100 billion ISK embezzled by an in-game investments manager. But 250 billion ISK was just 8 percent of the bank's 2.8 trillion held in deposits. Still a tidy sum, but hardly the whole kitty. That didn't stop EVE Ebankers from rushing the teller windows once word passed of Ricdic's dirty deeds.
He has since been kicked out of EVE, as selling in-game currency for real-world value is a no-no according to the TOS. Had he kept the ISK in-game, he would not have been sanctioned - by CCP anyway. In-game depositors may have had something to say and/or do about it.

Get Some Russian In Your Independence Day [Men Of War: Red Tide]
On July - 3 - 2009
War movies, games and books are a great way to reinforce patriotism on Independence Day; so here's a trailer for a World War II game... that happens to be Russian.
Men of War: Red Tide is a standalone expansion to the March 2009 PC realtime strategy game, Men of War. The game puts players in the shoes of the Black Coats — special Soviet forces that fought a ton of battles along shorelines during WWII. There are 23 missions in the game featuring Soviet, German, Italian and Romanian forces and a ton of military units at the player's disposal like tanks, armored cars, bombers, gunboats and other things that go boom.
This Independence Day... say it with Soviet Russia.

Impulse offering Red Faction 1 and 2 with Guerilla reserves
On July - 2 - 2009
Impulse loves Red Faction. The other digital download service is currently offering a hip pre-order deal for Red Faction: Guerilla. If you choose to reserve your digital copy, Impulse will give you original Red Faction (2001) and Red Faction II (2002). Both titles use Volition’s Geo-Mod technology to a startling degree: don’t be shocked if you accidently fall in a hole of your own creation.
Guerilla won’t hit the PC until August 25 of this year, so you have some time to consider your purchase. The bonuses, however, can be claimed as soon as your Impulse account has been charged.
I loved the original Red Faction, but I never got around to playing the immediate follow-up. It’s odd, really, considering how much I enjoyed the first game. I did recently purchase Guerrilla and I’ve loved nearly every second of it. It’s my pick for open-world action game of the year -- a definite can't miss title.

Steam madness: 20 games from 2K for a cool $54
On July - 2 - 2009
[Editor's Note: Forgive me, but I simply couldn't not use that picture again.]
Don't you just love those massive bundles on Steam that bring you an entire developer or publisher's catalog of games for a super discounted price? Of course you do, because saving money is always fun.
This time, we have got an appropriately-titled collection from 2K Games called the "Huge Game Pack." Sounds like one of those sketchy fifty-in-one "game systems" you'd find at a flea market, doesn't it? The bundle includes stuff like Sid Meier's Pirates!, BioShock, Freedom Force, X-COM, and a million versions of Civilization IV.
In total, there's 20 different games, and while the normal running price for this grouping is $60, the price has been brought down to $54 from now until July 7. If it weren't for Shacknews, I probably would have missed spotting this deal, so thank them for catching it!
