PREVIEW: Get to know Red Steel 2’s cowboy protagonist guy/thing
Imagine Roland of Gilead clenching a katana with one full-fingered hand. Now pretend our imaginary Roland fancies Asian dress and still remembers the face of his father. This Roland would look similar to the man in the header, which happens to be Red Steel 2’s protagonist and the point of the video below the fold.
Earlier this morning Ubisoft released a developer diary for Red Steel 2. In the video, the devs behind the title discuss -- at length and even in French -- the unnamed protagonist and his weaponry. If you haven’t caught on, the protagonist is a cowboy with a katana. Yee-haw.
Also, prepare to hear Clint Eastwood dropped one hundred percent more times than Roland of Gilead.
Red Steel 2 looks pretty and by all E3 2009 indications, appears to be living up to what the original was supposed to be. We’ll keep bringing the media and the information as it comes, especially if said media or information gives this gonzo cowboy a name. (We suggest "Bob.")

PREVIEW: Metroid Prime Trilogy trailer reminds us of the greatness
The Metroid Prime Trilogy, being released by Nintendo on Aug. 24, is the same three Prime games we played before just with Wii controls added to the two GameCube games in the pack, Metroid Prime and Metroid Prime 2: Echoes. Why do I want it so bad then!? I've played all these games multiple times and it isn't just the sexy box art that is attracting me. Maybe I just want another excuse to experience them again.
The trailer Nintendo put together isn't helping me not spend my money on games I already own either. Not only does it bring back plenty of awesome memories from the games, but it also reminds us of how epic the score for the games were. In my opinion the games had some of the most atmospheric music in gaming and it fit so well with Metroid's solitary feeling. Hit the jump to be reminded why you want this bundle so bad.

DEALZ: Cheap handhelds and Buy 2 Get 1 games!
Sometimes I like to fantasize about being John F. Kennedy. Except that I'd be smarter than to sic my brother on the Mafia after they helped ensure my presidential victory. And I wouldn't have abandoned those Cuban refugees. I'd still totally be tapping Marilyn, though. Some things just shouldn't change.
Some strong deals this week. GameStop is doing their annual "Buy 2 Get 1 Free" sale on used titles, so it might be a good time to swing by your local store and see what's on the table. Game Crazy has some serious savings on their used handheld units. And Target is offering gift cards when you buy some Xbox 360 stuff, including MS points!
Hit the jump for all the week's bargains. And, if you're in the UK, you should head over to Gemsi's cblog and check out what's on sale in your neighborhood.

EA Re-NERFs The Wii [Game Announce]
Packaging a video game with a NERF gun worked so well the first time that EA's doing it again, adding secret decoder functions to the arsenal in NERF 2: "N-Strike" Elite for the Nintendo Wii.
NERF 2 is being developed partially in celebration of the 40th anniversary of the NERF brand, and perhaps mostly due to the amazing sales of the first game. Set for a fall release, the new game comes with a new blaster - the NERF Switch Shot EX-3. New to the weapon is a NERF decoder scope, which reveals hidden elements when the screen is viewed through its ruby-red lens. The game itself is your basic rail shooter with NERF elements, including the ability to configure your in-game blaster with "millions" of upgrade combinations, as well as enhanced co-op play.
Poke fun at it if you'd like, but if I were twelve-years-old this is exactly the sort of junk I'd go crazy for. A video game plus a cat terrorizing device? Sold. Looks for NERF 2 to hit store shelves this fall.

Nintendo’s Newest Mascot Is The Wii Sports Resort Island [Wii]
Nintendo's reliance on Mario, Zelda and Pokemon is sometimes a loudly vocalized source of frustration for fans of the company hoping for something new. The good news is that you're getting a brand new character in Wii Sports Resort's island.
Shigeru Miyamoto, general manager of the Entertainment Analysis & Development Division—the team responsible for Wii Sports Resort—tells Nintendo president Satoru Iwata that the destination in the Wii sequel is essentially the star of the show. Wuhu Island, Miyamoto says, is designed to join the likes of Mario and Donkey Kong as a new Nintendo franchise, seen in multiple games.
"We really polished up the island, turned it into a resort and actually made the location into a kind of character," Miyamoto says in the latest "Iwata Asks" interview. "This will then lead to a range of island series... You could have adventure games, role-playing games, city-building simulation games... It will be fun to see all the ideas that we can come up with, won't it?"
Despite all the "(laughs)" peppered throughout the interview, Miyamoto sounds quite serious about "licensing it out as a franchise," meaning we could see Super Mario Resort or Tingle's Fantasy Island or... who knows what this madman will dream up next?
Miyamoto further justifies the idea by saying Wuhu Island will breed familiarity, like a real world city or town.
"We thought it would be a fun idea to have a location that everyone knows and then have all sorts of stuff going on there," he says. "It would mean that players would already know the town like the back of their hands by the time they came to buy the next adventure game. Everyone could play in a location they were familiar with which would truly turn it into a miniature garden."
Wait. Miniature garden? OMG PIKMIN 3 WILL BE ON AN ISLAND!
